Walking into a custom tailoring studio for the first time can feel intimidating. At Modern Men Collection Calgary, we make the process relaxed, informative, and even enjoyable. Here is exactly what to expect at your first custom suit fitting.
Before You Arrive: Preparation Tips
- Bring inspiration – Photos from magazines or Pinterest help us understand your style direction.
- Know your event – Wedding, business event, or special occasion? The occasion shapes everything.
- Wear fitted clothing – A thin fitted t-shirt and slim trousers help us see your natural body lines.
- Come with an open mind – Our stylists may suggest options you have never considered.
The Consultation (30-45 minutes)
Your first visit starts with a conversation, not measurements. Our Calgary stylists will discuss occasion and usage, style preferences, and budget and expectations. We will explain what is included at each investment level so you can make an informed decision.
The Measurement Session (20-30 minutes)
Our tailor takes comprehensive measurements: shoulder width, chest, waist, back length, arm length, hip, thigh, trouser length, and inseam. We also observe your natural posture which affects how we cut the pattern. All measurements are stored for future orders your measurements are on file forever.
Fabric Selection (15-20 minutes)
You will select from our fabric swatches: everything from classic navy and charcoal to windowpane checks and herringbones. For wedding suits, we recommend solid colors or subtle patterns that photograph well. We carry fabrics from Vitale Barberis Canonico, Holland and Sherry, and Loro Piana.
Jacket and Trouser Style Selection
For the jacket, you will choose lapel style (notch, peak, or shawl), closure (single, two, or three button), pockets, vent style, and shoulder style. For trousers, you will choose fit (slim, regular, or relaxed), break (no, half, or full), waistband, and cuffs.
Inside the Suit: Linings and Details
Modern Men Collection lets you personalize the inside: full lining, half lining, or unlined; lining color from classic grey to vibrant patterns; button material (horn, corozo, or mother of pearl); and optional monogram initials.
Timeline: When Will Your Suit Be Ready?
- Week 1-2 – Pattern cutting and initial construction.
- Week 3-4 – Canvas fitting to confirm fit before final finishing.
- Week 5-6 – Final finishing with outer cloth, lining, and details.
- Week 6-8 – Final fitting and delivery.
Standard turnaround is 6-8 weeks. Rush options are available for events within 4 weeks.
Caring for Your Custom Suit
Hang your suit on a broad wooden hanger after each wear. Use a suit brush to remove surface dust. Steam (never iron directly) to remove wrinkles. Dry clean sparingly. Rotate your suits to let them rest between wears.
